Bloodhounds are known for their amazing sense of smell, their large size, their intelligence, and those beautiful wrinkles and long ears that we all love. The AKC Bloodhound Breed Standard lists the average size of males as 110 lbs and 100 lbs for adult females. There are three colors recognized by the AKC- Red, Liver and tan, and Black and Tan.
Bloodhounds are very large dogs, they do slobber a lot, they shed, they have a hound smell, they are VERY stubborn, VERY destructive if bored, they can be loud and noisy, they are very active and can be hyper. Bloodhounds are known for being hard to housebreak, sometimes they are not fully house broken until they are 6 months old. They do not start to calm down until they are about 3 years old. Bloodhounds need a large amount of exercise every day.
Bloodhounds can be possessive over food, toys, etc. resource guarding is an unfortunately common thing with the breed and it is something you will have to always stay on top of.
It is extremely hard to have a bloodhound without some type of fence, they will not stay in your yard or on your property without one.
Bloodhounds are also affectionate, loyal, sensitive, intelligent, they are comedians and will make you laugh all day, they have hearts of gold if treated with love! Bloodhounds are not for everyone... but once you are owned by and love a bloodhound, it is hard to have just one!!!!!!
